Cross Country Skiing at Camp Forest Springs

Skier enjoying the trails at Camp Forest Springs

We have 20km of trails groomed for classic and skate skiing. The glacial moraine landscape lends itself to a trail system with a variable terrain. We have 12 loop trails, mostly 1 to 2 km in length and varying from easy to quite difficult. They are wooded (northern hardwoods plus pines and hemlocks), groomed almost daily, averaging 12’ wide.

We received another inch or so of new snow this morning, so Tim was out
grooming today. The trails got skied a lot today but will be in excellent
condition for tomorrow (Sunday). This is probably the best conditions of
the winter, so come on out and ski it before the warm days of March hit!

XC Skiers - come on out for (at least) one more weekend of great skiing!
We packed the 18” of wet, heavy snow with the LMC, then set tracks with the
Sherpa & Ginzu; *conditions are excellent* for both skating and classic
skiing!

After receiving 18” of heavy, wet snow on Tuesday night/ Wednesday, we
groomed the ski trails with the LMC (snowcat, like a Pisten Bully) and then
set tracks with the Sherpa & Ginzu Groomer. It needs an evening to set up/
firm up - it should be *excellent skiing tomorrow (Friday)*!  No thin snow
cover anymore. Looking forward to the best conditions of this winter, but
perhaps not for many more days (looks like warm temps next week)!

After skiing the Birkie on Saturday, I can easily say that the Camp Forest
Springs trails have at least as much snow cover as the Birkie trail and are
in excellent condition!  Under the pine and hemlockk trees there are a lot
of little twigs and needles but a minimal snowfall and a regroom will take
care of that.

We hosted the Rib Lake HinderBinder 23km ski race on Saturday, Feb. 18; trail conditions for both skate and classic races were excellent! The 3” of new snow on Friday made for a lot of trail grooming work but it turned out great. The snow base is surprisingly adequate even after warm temps and sunshine today, with some new snow expected Tuesday, Thursday, and especially later this next weekend. That should set us up for great skiing well into March!

Friday, February 10th at 11:15 AM

Tim and I will be out on the trails today, grooming the skate lanes and
moving/ shoveling snow to cover up the thin stretches (where the snow cover
is very thin).  We are getting it ready for the Rib Lake Hinderbinder race
here on Feb. 18 and fully expecting to have very good conditions for it.
In the meantime, keep checking here or on skinnyski.com for updated trail
conditions.
Conditions, at least for skating, should be Very Good to Excellent by this
afternoon and remain that way for tomorrow.

What a beautiful morning to be out grooming trails as the full moon was
going down and the sun was coming up! The skate lanes are all freshly
groomed (or in the process); they were very icy but the Ginzu grooomer is
scarifying and making them very ski-able again. Should be fast/ very good
to excellent skiing! Classic tracks are not regroomed because they still
look solid and good (but icy, at least until it warms up a bit).

The xc ski trails (skate lanes) were all re-groomed this morning.
Considering the warm/sunny weather lately, the trails are looking
surprisingly great! The tracks look great; rock solid and icy until
it warms up & softens in the afternoon. The skate lanes are very firm and
fast and fun if you pick the right time of the day to ski (late morning to
around noon, then again as the sun starts to set).

I skied a few kilometers of the trails early this a.m. - Wow, it is
fantastic if you love skiing really fast! In other words, it is somewhat
icy (and maybe too fast) for safe skiing until the snow warms up and gets
softer. It is like “spring skiing”; you need to find the right time of day
to be on the trails (too early and it is icy, too late and it is soft and
slow). Snow cover is still good.

Tuesday, January 31st at 03:01 PM

The ski trails were groomed on Monday afternoon & Tuesday morning and they
look fantastic! The 1” of new snow groomed up very well and made the trails
just a bit better than before.
With this warm weather, skiing is best in the early morning, before the sun
starts heating up the air and snow temps!

Trails are in EXCELLENT condition!  I just finished grooming (again) and it
is beautiful out there; PTL!  Snow cover under the hemlock trees on Skidder
and Rollercoaster is finally good. Everything else is excellent except the
trail across the field (to the ski hill) is windblown and hard to see where
I just groomed.

The cross-country ski trails are in the best condition of the season so
far.  Everything was groomed again last night and it is beautiful!  I skied
some of the tracks this morning; it was a bit slow but still great! The
recent snows, while not huge, have been sufficient to cover up the thin
spots and enable us to set great tracks for striding (and smooth, firm
skate lane).

We received about 4” of beautiful snow on Monday, then groomed the trails
on Monday night. The trail conditions - excellent! All of the trails are
now groomed and open for nordic skiing every day of the week. I skied the
tracks yesterday; the snow was great but not fast (which made for a great
workout!).

The trails are all groomed and looking beautiful!  Other than a few short
stretches (on Rollercoaster and Skidder) of trail, there is very good snow
coverage, firm tracks and nive corduroy for skating. Come on out and enjoy
it!

The ski trails have all been groomed in the last few days and are in
excellent condition. It was cold but beautiful out there as I was grooming
early this morning! Praise the Lord for the snow we’ve been getting and
look forward to getting a little more on Friday!

Wednesday, January 18th at 09:26 AM

The xc trails were groomed and in excellent condition last weekend! Skiing
on Monday was great, then we got about 1” of new snow on Tuesday morning. I
groomed half (about 10km) of the trails Tuesday afternoon and they look
great! It looks like we’ll get a little more snow tonight, so I’ll groom
sometime afterwards (Thursday). Snow coverage is sufficient on 95% of the
20km; the short stretches under the hemlock trees could use more snow.

This is a new feature on our website - cross-country ski trail conditions report! We have 20km of trails groomed for skate and classic skiing. The 4+” of new snow really helped the trails and we groomed them yesterday and today. Most of the trails are in great shape, with some thin snow coverage under the hemlock trees; we could use another big snow for that. The ski trails are open to the public and there is no trail fee but trail maintenence donations are appreciated!
